Rangers come up short in finale
Derek Holland’s afternoon began with a five-pitch walk to Dodgers leadoff hitter Juan Pierre. It was the beginning of a five-inning struggle. “It was just a bad day,” Holland said after the Rangers lost to the Dodgers, 6-3, for the second time in three games. The Rangers’ offense began the afternoon by scoring two runs in the first on a walk, two singles and a botched double play by the Dodgers. That was the pinnacle of the Rangers’ offensive performance on an afternoon in which their June hitting slump only grew worse. “No, it’s not very good,” Kinsler said after the Rangers finished with six hits against Dodgers starter Chad Billingsley and two relievers on Sunday afternoon at Rangers Ballpark. Everybody’s day ended with Andruw Jones being called out on strikes in the bottom of the ninth, then turning and yelling at home plate umpire Sam Holbrook before being led away in the 92-degree heat by third-base coach Dave Anderson. It was just not a good afternoon for the Rangers overall as they lost for the eighth time in the past 13 games and are now just 2 1/2 games ahead of the Angels in the American League West. Holland allowed four runs in five innings while giving up five hits and four walks. The big blow was a three-run home run by Casey Blake in the third inning, but Holland was most disturbed by the four walks. Two of them came around to score.
“Four walks … that’s high,” Holland said. “That’s not good enough. That shows I didn’t go after hitters. I was falling behind in the count. I’ve got to go after hitters. I’m really hard on myself and this just wasn’t very good. I was doing a very good job of locating the ball. I just didn’t attack the zone enough.” Instead, he lost his third straight start and is now 0-3 with a 7.08 ERA in four starts since going into the rotation. He has an 8.54 ERA in his past seven games overall to raise his ERA from 1.74 to 6.63. ”It’s a learning process,” Rangers manager Ron Washington said. “He’ll get there. He’s learning. He’s facing professional hitters. He understands that when you get into trouble, you’ve got to continue to pitch. You can’t give in. He’ll continue to get better. When he left the game, we were still in it. We were only down, 4-3.” Rangers pitchers overall walked seven on the afternoon. The Rangers are now 2-7 this season in games in which their pitchers walk at least six batters. “They made Derek work from his first pitch,” Washington said. “They made every single one of our pitchers work. They are a good contact-hitting team, they’ve got a little speed and they’ve got a little pop.” The Rangers didn’t work the Dodgers pitchers quite as hard. They drew just one walk, the 29th time this season they’ve walked two or fewer times in a game. The Rangers are 14-15 when that happens. The Dodgers, who have the best record in in baseball, have just 14 games with two or fewer walks. ”We’ll just keep working,” Washington said. “They haven’t lost confidence. We just went through a bad week. In the game of baseball, that happens.”
McCarthy has stress fracture in shoulder
The Rangers learned on Monday that they will be without starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy for an extended period of time. The right-hander is sidelined with a stress fracture in his right shoulder blade and will be out for “several weeks,” according to Rangers general manager Jon Daniels. It is a similar injury to the one that sidelined him for almost a month late in the 2007 season. This will be the fourth time in three years that McCarthy has gone on the disabled list. The Rangers suffered a 6-3 loss to the Blue Jays in the opener of a four-game home series on Monday night. McCarthy, who is 5-2 with a 4.92 ERA in 11 starts, came out of his most recent start against the Yankees feeling some soreness. An examination on Monday revealed the stress fracture in the shoulder blade. “It’s frustrating,” Daniels said. “I feel for him.” Doug Mathis, who was 4-2 with a 2.89 in 10 starts for Triple-A Oklahoma, will start on Tuesday. This could mean that Derek Holland will stay in the rotation once Matt Harrison returns from the disabled list, but the Rangers want to take a look at Mathis, who was 3-0 with a 0.43 ERA in his last four starts at Oklahoma. “We’re going to let Doug pitch tomorrow and see how he does,” Daniels said. “We’re not ruling Doug out. He’s deserving of the opportunity.” Daniels did not rule out looking for starting pitching outside the organization through a trade. “I’m open to it,” Daniels said. “It’s something we’ll look into, but it’s easier said than done. My expectation is we’ll go with the guys we have. If there is a quality guy available, we’ll look into it, but it’s easier said than done.” Harrison, who is sidelined with a strained left shoulder, threw in the bullpen on Monday. He is expected to come off the disabled list and start on Thursday. At that point, Holland was expected to go back to the bullpen.

Holland likely headed to ‘pen this week
Derek Holland’s best start as a Major Leaguer, at least according to the Rangers’ pitcher and his manager, might not be enough to save the rookie southpaw from a demotion. One night after rehabbing left-hander Matt Harrison (shoulder inflammation) allowed one run on three hits over three innings in a start for Double-A Frisco, Texas skipper Ron Washington said the 23-year-old Holland will likely return to the bullpen before Thursday’s home game against Toronto. Harrison, who struck out five in Saturday’s 41-pitch rehab stint, will meet with Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux and Washington on Monday in Arlington to discuss whether the lefty will need another tuneup before being activated Thursday. Harrison, who struck out five in Saturday’s 41-pitch rehab stint, will meet with Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux and Washington on Monday in Arlington to discuss whether the lefty will need another tuneup before being activated Thursday. “We’ll see how [Harrison] recovers,” Washington said. “It’s our expectation [that he'll be activated Thursday], but we’ll talk about that [Monday]. “If Harrison is ready Thursday, then Holland will be in the bullpen.”Washington said there is no scenario in which Holland could remain in the rotation upon Harrison’s return. The Rangers rotation also includes Scott Feldman, Brandon McCarthy, Kevin Millwood and Vicente Padilla. “I can’t see both of them in there,” Washington said. “If that’s the case, then we would need some help in the bullpen. Holland certainly gives us that length in the bullpen.”
Holland, who limited the Red Sox to one run through four innings on Saturday night before faltering in the fifth, will likely supplant Kris Benson as the Rangers’ long reliever. Benson (1-1, 8.46 ERA) was unimpressive in relief of Holland on Saturday, allowing four runs (three earned) over 2 1/3 innings.

Francisco’s first run sends Texas to loss
Frank Francisco’s magical ride came to a sour end on Sunday afternoon, and so did the Rangers’ magnificent month of May. Francisco, who had not given up an earned run in his last 30 appearances going back to Aug. 18, 2008, did so on Sunday at a most inopportune moment. Called in to preserve a tie game and allow the Rangers to complete a gritty comeback, Francisco instead gave up a home run to Adam Kennedy with one out in the ninth inning that gave the Athletics a 5-4 victory at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. The Rangers, who lead the American League West by 4 1/2 games, trailed 4-0 with nine outs to go, but scored two in the seventh and two in the eighth to tie the game. They also had the best of the back end of their bullpen to finish the comeback. “We’ll take those odds all day long,” third baseman Michael Young said. “Frankie has been lights out all year long. We expect him to be great, they just got a big home run off him. If we have that situation again, I like our chances.” Francisco had not allowed a run in 17 2/3 innings this season, the most innings this season by a Major League pitcher without giving up a run. “Fastball down the middle,” Francisco said an hour after the game was over. “We can’t expect him to be perfect,” outfielder David Murphy said. “We’re disappointed with the way it happened, but by no means did we expect him to be scoreless the entire season. He’s allowed to make a mistake now and then.” The loss ends the Rangers’ three-game winning streak, but they still went 20-9 in May, the second winningest month in club history. “We’re not dumping champagne on our head because we had a good May, but we are making progress,” Young said. “We’re getting better and we’re finding ways to attack our weaknesses. I expect that to continue.” Rangers manager Ron Washington had a fully rested bullpen ready for both the ninth inning and extra frames. Jason Jennings, C.J. Wilson, Darren O’Day and Francisco were all ready to go if needed. Washington just wanted one scoreless inning with his closer and then would take a shot to win it in the ninth. “In a tie game, it’s either bring in your closer or not use him,” Washington said. Athletics manager Bob Geren, who was already deep into the back end of his bullpen by having used both Michael Wuertz and Andrew Bailey, knew the Rangers were in good position. “When they bring in a guy who hasn’t allowed a run backed up by Wilson, you think you’ve got to score two to beat them,” Geren said. “Emotionally, it was big to win against a guy who hasn’t given up a run this season. That guy has a good arm and a good offspeed pitch. He is one of the best closers in the game.” The Rangers spent the first six innings of the afternoon totally baffled by Athletics left-hander Dallas Braden. He allowed just three hits through those six frames while Rangers starter Kevin Millwood gave up a home run to Kennedy in the first and Jason Giambi in the sixth. The home run by Giambi was his 37th against the Rangers in his career, most for any active player. Millwood was gone after six, having thrown 116 pitches, and was not involved in the decision. After carrying the Rangers’ pitching staff in April, he finished May at 2-2 with a 4.28 ERA. He does not have a win in his last three starts and just one in his last five starts. “I was just a little inconsistent out there,” Millwood said. “I threw too many pitches, especially in the first and second inning, that ran me out of gas. I still feel like I’m pitching well but not getting the results. It is what it is. All I can do is control what I can control and not worry about anything else.” Millwood left trailing, 2-0, against Braden. The Athletics scored two more off Derek Holland to make it 4-0 before the Rangers struck back with a two-run double from Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the bottom of the seventh. They tied it in the bottom of the eighth after Young led off with an infield hit and Nelson Cruz drew a one-out walk against Wuertz. Bailey took over, but singles by Hank Blalock and Marlon Byrd tied the game. Bailey kept it that way by striking out Murphy and getting Saltalamacchia on a popout.

Rangers win as Hamilton homers in return
Josh Hamilton, fresh off the disabled list, hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to snap a 1-1 tie and help give the Rangers a 7-1 victory over the Mariners on Tuesday night at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Michael Young, who had missed the previous two games with a stiff back, set up the home run with his third hit of the night off Mariners reliever Mark Lowe. Hamilton then went deep with just his third home run of the season, and the Rangers added four more after that before the inning was over. Rookie Derek Holland earned his first Major League victory in relief of starter Scott Feldman. The first-place Rangers have won 12 of their past 17 games. Feldman allowed one run on four hits over 6 1/3 innings and now has a 2.74 ERA in four starts. He threw 109 pitches, the most he has thrown in 29 Major League starts. Chris Davis hit his fourth home run in eight games to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead against Mariners left-hander Jason Vargas in the fifth inning. It was Davis’ ninth home run of the season and his second in 31 at-bats against left-handed pitchers.

Millwood strong, but falls to White Sox
Kevin Millwood had pitched at least seven innings in each of his first six starts this season, and hit that mark again Saturday night, but that’s where he encountered trouble in a 3-2 loss to the White Sox at U.S Cellular Field. A 2-2 game swung in the eighth, when Millwood gave up a leadoff single to Chris Getz and drilled Carlos Quentin with a pitch. Millwood was removed after Jermaine Dye’s single to right. Derek Holland entered a bases-loaded jam with Jim Thome at the plate. The lefty broke Thome’s bat on a grounder to second, which Ian Kinsler used to force Getz out at home. For one batter, Holland did his job and gave way to Darren O’Day. O’Day couldn’t preserve the tie. Paul Konerko worked a 3-2 count before lifting a sacrifice fly to center that scored Quentin and gave the White Sox the go-ahead run Millwood was charged with three earned runs on seven hits in seven-plus innings. .
Young guns help Rangers take finale
One hour into Monday’s game at Camden Yards, Matt Harrison’s ERA was hovering at 10.26, David Murphy’s batting average was sitting at .037 and Taylor Teagarden was at .117. Those are the kind of numbers that get young players free plane tickets to Oklahoma City rather than free gift certificates from being on the “Star of the Game” show. Then suddenly, about two hours into the game, all three were worthy candidates for a post-game spotlight. Harrison was looking like a left-handed Zack Greinke and Teagarden and Murphy were delivering the big hits that gave the Rangers a 6-4 victory over the Orioles at Camden Yards. The Rangers trailed 4-0 after two innings, but were able to rally for a win that left them 4-3 on the roadtrip. They took three of four from the Orioles that included two come-from-behind victories and return home to play the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
“A good roadtrip,” outfielder Marlon Byrd said. “A real good road trip, especially winning three here. We’ve got a good team; we should expect to win every series. I know that’s not possible but this is the way you have to play to get into the playoffs. I’d love to be Boston and win 11 in a row, but I’ll take about six series in a row.” The Rangers looked early on like they were going to be splitting this four-game series and heading back with a losing record on the road trip. Harrison allowed seven of the first ten batters he faced to reach base and found himself down four runs with one out and one on in the second. That’s when the whole night turned around. Harrison retired the next two hitters, including one on a high pop to shallow right-center that Murphy dropped and was still able to get a force at second. From then on, Harrison was practically untouchable. The final two outs of the second were the first two of 16 straight hitters retired by Harrison. He allowed a two-out single to Robert Andino in the seventh, but got Brian Roberts to fly out to right to end the inning. By that time the Rangers were sitting on a 6-4 lead. “The night definitely belonged to Matt Harrison,” manager Ron Washington said. “We know he is capable of doing that, maybe tonight will turn things around. He was outstanding.” Harrison credited some between-start adjustments, including speeding up his tempo and delivery. “I just tried to change the tempo of my delivery and attack hitters,” Harrison said. “The first couple of innings I was up in the zone and wasn’t finding my release point. I slowed it down just a little and started getting the ball down in the strike zone. I just got into a groove and kept going with it.” Harrison was also smart enough to know that maybe it was time to get his act together. Scott Feldman pitched well in a spot-start on Saturday, Kris Benson could come off the disabled list sometime soon and Derek Holland is sitting out there in the bullpen. “I knew I had to have a good outing,” Harrison said. “Other guys have been getting the job done. After three rough starts, this one was big. I felt my back was to the wall. I had to put the trust back into these guys and show them I can get the job done.”
Rangers call up top prospect Holland
Derek Holland, one of the Rangers’ top Minor League pitching prospects, has arrived at the Major League level. The Rangers are counting on it to be for good, even if he is starting out in the bullpen. Holland was called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday to reinforce the Rangers’ struggling bullpen. To make room, the Rangers designated reliever Josh Rupe for assignment. “I don’t even know — it hasn’t even hit me yet,” Holland said, standing in the Rangers’ clubhouse before Saturday’s game with the Royals. “It probably won’t hit me until I get out on the field. Even on the drive down here [from Oklahoma City], it didn’t hit me.” Holland has been used almost exclusively as a starter in the Rangers’ farm system since being taken as a draft-and-follow player in the 25th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft. But the Rangers have decided to break him in at the Major League level as a reliever. “As we looked at it, Derek was the best option for our bullpen,” general manager Jon Daniels said. “It’s something we discussed in Spring Training, breaking camp in this role. We feel he’s a strike thrower with the stuff and the maturity to handle it. He’ll be used initially in the bullpen. “Obviously, we see him as a starter down the line, but right now he’ll be in the bullpen.” Rangers relievers went into Saturday’s game with an 8.63 ERA, having allowed 43 hits and 21 walks in 32 1/3 innings. They had allowed runs in eight of the club’s 10 games, and the biggest concern is in middle relief, which is where Holland will be used. “We’re trying to straighten out the bullpen, especially in the middle,” manager Ron Washington said. “We looked down there, and he was the best we have. We’ll use him as a long guy and probably try to get him multiple innings whenever he comes in. It will probably be before the eighth. “We’ll watch him closely. We certainly won’t abuse him. We won’t leave him out there to take a beating.”
