Rangers acquire RHP Jason Grilli

Rangers beat writer Jeff Wilson has confirms (and T.R. Sullivan has it on his blog) that the Rangers sent cash considerations to Colorado in return for RHP Jason Grilli, who was designated for assignment last week. You would think that could mean the end of the Kris Benson experiment in Texas.

Grilli, 32, is 0-2 with a 6.05 ERA with 22 strikeouts and 13 walks in 19.1 innings this season. He has allowed at least one earned run in his last five outings. Walks probably haven’t helped as he has seven in his last 5 1/3 innings.

Grilli (who is 6-5) had a 1.08 ERA in April before struggles in May. Lefties are hitting .375 against him and righties .327. Grilli had a 3.00 ERA in 2008 as he pitched with Detroit and Colorado (75 innings). He had 69 strikeouts and 38 walks in that time.

Maybe a change of scenery and a chance to work with pitching coach Mike Maddux will help Grilli. Obviously, the Rangers are hoping he could get back to what he did in 2008 and in April of this season.

Holland likely headed to ‘pen this week

Derek Holland’s best start as a Major Leaguer, at least according to the Rangers’ pitcher and his manager, might not be enough to save the rookie southpaw from a demotion. One night after rehabbing left-hander Matt Harrison (shoulder inflammation) allowed one run on three hits over three innings in a start for Double-A Frisco, Texas skipper Ron Washington said the 23-year-old Holland will likely return to the bullpen before Thursday’s home game against Toronto. Harrison, who struck out five in Saturday’s 41-pitch rehab stint, will meet with Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux and Washington on Monday in Arlington to discuss whether the lefty will need another tuneup before being activated Thursday. Harrison, who struck out five in Saturday’s 41-pitch rehab stint, will meet with Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux and Washington on Monday in Arlington to discuss whether the lefty will need another tuneup before being activated Thursday. “We’ll see how [Harrison] recovers,” Washington said. “It’s our expectation [that he'll be activated Thursday], but we’ll talk about that [Monday]. “If Harrison is ready Thursday, then Holland will be in the bullpen.”Washington said there is no scenario in which Holland could remain in the rotation upon Harrison’s return. The Rangers rotation also includes Scott Feldman, Brandon McCarthy, Kevin Millwood and Vicente Padilla. “I can’t see both of them in there,” Washington said. “If that’s the case, then we would need some help in the bullpen. Holland certainly gives us that length in the bullpen.”

Holland, who limited the Red Sox to one run through four innings on Saturday night before faltering in the fifth, will likely supplant Kris Benson as the Rangers’ long reliever. Benson (1-1, 8.46 ERA) was unimpressive in relief of Holland on Saturday, allowing four runs (three earned) over 2 1/3 innings.

Rangers’ rout makes for May history

The Rangers have only one more day to enjoy one of the best months in club history. This month has been so good, in fact, for the Rangers that it has even exceeded what they accomplished last year in May. That’s saying something. The Rangers pushed this month into new heights of historical standing when they pounded the Oakland Athletics, 14-1, before a near-sellout crowd of 45,325 fans at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on Saturday. Brandon McCarthy survived a near-disastrous first inning to earn his fifth victory, most on the staff, and the Rangers have won 14 of their past 19 games. They are also now 20-8 for the month of May, their most victories ever in that month in club history. It’s only the second time in Rangers history that they’ve won 20 games in a month, one short of the record of 21-10 set in September 1978. “A refreshing victory,” Rangers manager Ron Washington said. “We’re having fun and it’s easy to have fun when you’re doing the things we’re doing. We’re pitching pretty good, catching the ball pretty good and doing enough to put runs on the board. Tonight we broke out a little bit.” The Rangers were 19-10 in May last season on their way to a 79-83 record for the season. That 19-10 record came after a 10-18 April and left them four games behind the Angels in the American League West when the month was over. This season, after going 10-11 in April, the Rangers have now been sitting in first place in the AL West for 25 straight days. That’s their longest continuous stretch sitting in first place since 1999 when they won their last division title by spending 139 straight days atop the AL West. “It all starts with pitching and defense,” said third baseman Michael Young, who had three hits. “I know that sounds like a broken record around here, but that’s why we’re having so much fun.” The Rangers’ offense joined in the fun with 17 hits, second most in a game this season, and five walks. The Rangers, who came into the game with the third fewest walks in the American League, have 24 walks in their past five games. Ian Kinsler had two walks and scored after both. “If you’re generating walks, you’re having good at-bats and not swinging at bad pitches,” Kinsler said. “That’s what we need all up and down the lineup, just tough at-bats. Swing at strikes and take balls. If we can be consistent in that, our offense will be much better.” McCarthy was the one issuing walks early in a strange first inning. He threw 22 pitches and only seven of them were strikes. He walked the first two batters and three of the first four, and still escaped with just one run scored. After McCarthy walked the first two hitters, he fell behind 2-0 to Matt Holliday. Pitching coach Mike Maddux made a quick visit to the mound and McCarthy responded immediately to what he said. He threw a four-seam fastback and Holliday hit it right at second baseman Kinsler for a double play. “I don’t even remember what [Maddux] said,” McCarthy said. “I was searching all over the place trying to find something. It was probably the same message he always says: ‘Go after them … you have good stuff …now find it.’” McCarthy then walked Jason Giambi and got a break when Kurt Suzuki’s double deep into the right-center field gap ricocheted into the Rangers’ bullpen. That kept a second run from scoring and McCarthy then wiggled out of the inning by getting Ryan Sweeney on a pop to third base. Sweeney’s popout started a complete turnaround for McCarthy. Sweeney was the first of 12 straight hitters McCarthy retired. McCarthy also retired 16 of 18 hitters before leaving after six innings. By then, the Rangers were sitting on a 10-1 lead. “I really have no answer,” McCarthy said. “I just settled in and got back to getting into a groove.” The Rangers as a team have been in one for most of May. They’ve also been doing pretty good against the AL West. The Rangers need one more victory against the Athletics on Sunday to sweep the four-game series. If so, it would be their third straight sweep of an AL West opponent after taking a pair of three-game series on the last homestand against the Mariners and Angels. They are 13-2 against the AL West so far this season.

Francisco may return for Houston series

Rangers closer Frank Francisco threw 20 pain-free pitches in a simulated game on Wednesday at Comerica Park. Barring an unexpected setback, he’s slated to return from the 15-day disabled list for Friday’s three-game series opener in Houston. “He did great,” Rangers manager Ron Washington said. “He threw all his pitches, had good velocity, the split had depth to it, the breaking ball was sharp. He was very happy with the results, and I was very happy that he was happy.” Francisco, who ranks third in the Majors with nine saves, has not pitched in a game since May 6 due to right biceps tendinitis. On Wednesday, the right-hander faced two hitters — catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and center fielder Josh Hamilton — with a large group of Rangers players and coaches surrounding the batting cage. “He looked good,” pitching coach Mike Maddux said. “When you’re coming off an injury, per se, it’s all about how you bounce back.” Francisco threw a side session from 120 feet on Saturday. He felt no pain, liked his location, but reported unusually decreased zip on his fastball. Texas responded by placing him on the 15-day DL retroactive to May 7. The Rangers said the zip returned Wednesday afternoon. “His velocity looked good,” said Hamilton, who is still day-to-day with a groin injury. “It had late life, when it comes out of his hand and then — boom! [He] had his curveball working. … That’s the first time I ever faced him. I’m usually behind him in the outfield, but he looked good.” Francisco has gone 9-for-9 in save opportunities this season. He has not allowed an earned run in 14 2/3 innings. His 14 unblemished appearances mark the longest scoreless stretch to begin a season in club history.

Millwood leading Texas staff by example

If the definition of a No. 1 starter is a pitcher with overpowering stuff who can dominate the opposition for nine innings and finish with double-digit strikeouts, then Kevin Millwood is probably not that guy. If a No. 1 starter is a pitcher who takes a leadership role on his team, leads by example in adopting the franchise’s new pitching philosophy, sets the tone for the pitching staff from Day One and delivers quality innings in one start after another, then Millwood has been just that for the Rangers in their surprising ascent into first place in the American League West. From his Opening Day start to being the winning pitcher in the first of three straight victories over the Angels this past weekend, Millwood has been the undisputed leader of a pitching staff that has a 4.54 ERA for the season — almost one run better than last year — and a 3.45 ERA in winning 17 of the past 22 games. “He has been the bellcow,” Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux said. “He’s taken the bull by the horns. He’s pulling guys along with him. He’s not pushing them, he’s pulling guys. He’s the consummate professional in his preparation, dedication, work ethic and execution of game plan.” Pitching has been the No. 1 reason why the Rangers have won seven straight and go into their three-game series against the Tigers on Tuesday at Comerica Park with a 4 1/2-game lead in the AL West. The Rangers entered this season as a franchise on a mission to get better pitching. Club president Nolan Ryan issued the edict at the end of last season and Maddux was hired in November to direct the program. What the Rangers really needed though was their No. 1 starter to embrace the new program that includes a greater emphasis on conditioning, working quickly in games, establishing the low fastball, pounding the strike zone and have starters pitch deeper in the game. Millwood did just that on Opening Day against the Indians when he allowed one run on five hits in seven innings. He walked one batter and threw 113 pitches in a resounding 9-1 victory.

Rangers bullpen is rested and ready

The Rangers starters are on a roll. Their
relievers, for the most part, just sit back and watch. Last
year, the Rangers had the most overworked bullpen in the
league. Now, they have one of the most rested. In a stunning
development, Rangers relievers went into Sunday’s game having
thrown the fewest innings in the American League. Last year,
they had the most. “It’s a beautiful thing,” Rangers reliever
Eddie Guardado said. “Anytime your starters are going
six-plus innings, it’s awesome. It takes a lot of pressure
off the bullpen, and everybody knows their role. It’s like a
domino effect.” But it also means less regular work. Jason
Jennings, who was the Rangers’ most effective setup reliever
in April, has pitched just twice in May. Entering Sunday,
Kris Benson had pitched just once in May, and that was 10
days ago in Oakland. The Rangers spent the last week of
Spring Training trying to find 2-3 relievers who could give
them multiple innings; now they don’t have any use for them.
Rangers starters went into Sunday’s game averaging 6.6
innings per start in their last 22 games. “The toughest thing
is, we’re on a good roll and you want to be a part of it and
contribute,” Jennings said. “But the season is a weird thing.
You’ll have a two-week period where the starters go 7-8
innings and then you’ll have a stretch of two weeks where
they have to work hard to go 5-6 innings, and that’s when it
comes in to play where we have to pick them up.” Rangers
starters have pitched at least six innings in 16 of their
last 22 games. They went at least eight innings in five of
those games. In 2008, Rangers starters went at least eight
innings in just nine games over the entire 162-game season.
“If a starter wants to go eight innings, you’re not going to
stop them,” manager Ron Washington said. “I’m not going to
take a guy out just to get somebody some work.” The Rangers
employ a seven-man bullpen. Washington said there is no talk
about dropping a reliever and going with an extra man on the
bench. Pitching coach Mike Maddux said, “There is safety in
numbers” and the Rangers really don’t need an extra man on
the bench right now. Washington is having enough trouble
juggling playing time for his outfielders, and shortstop
Elvis Andrus is the only starter that he pinch-hits for
during a game. The Rangers could use some speed off the bench
        — Greg Golson — but Washington at this point still wants
the seven relievers. “I’d like the extra bench player,”
Washington said. “I’d welcome that. It just doesn’t work for
us. Even though you have a seven-man bullpen, somebody is
always down, so you’re dealing with just six, anyway.” Some
managers like the extra bench player when playing in a
National League city without the designated hitter. There is
more potential for using reserves because of pinch-hitting
for the pitcher and the possibility of a double-switch. The
Rangers play in Houston next weekend, but Washington said
it’s unlikely they’ll add the extra bench player in place of
        a reliever.

Francisco questionable for set with Halos

Frank Francisco played catch on Thursday without any pain or soreness in his shoulder but remains unavailable as the Rangers closer. Francisco hasn’t pitched since April 29 in Oakland because of biceps tendinitis. The Rangers haven’t put him on the disabled list, but his availability for the three-game series with the Angels this weekend is questionable at best.

Francisco played seven minutes of catch with trainer Jamie Reed before Thursday’s game with the Mariners but did not throw off a mound. “Today was good,” pitching coach Mike Maddux said. “He had no pain. It was a good first step. Tomorrow we’ll push it.” Francisco will throw on flat ground again Friday but the Rangers aren’t sure if he’ll pitch off the mound. They may wait and have him do that on Saturday. “The general consensus is he’s feeling good,” general manager Jon Daniels said. “So we’re going to play it safe on the front end rather than being regretful on the back end.” C.J. Wilson, who hasn’t given up an earned run in his past six outings, is the Rangers replacement closer but he threw 25 pitches over two innings in a 6-5 victory over the Mariners on Wednesday night. Francisco hasn’t allowed a run in 14 appearances all season. He is still tied for the American League lead with nine saves, along with Jonathan Papelbon of the Red Sox and Brian Fuentes of the Angels.
